Split system: a system consisting of a heat pump or condenser (outside unit) and one or more air handlers (inside your basement or attic or wall-mounted).

Package unit: a system consisting of only one unit which is both the condenser and the air handler. Used often in large buildings.

Some split systems and package systems provide heat as well as cooling. This is due to the fact that they use a heat pump instead of a condenser.
